Re: Pokemon Go (Android/iOS) coming 2016

This is just a guess, but I don't think it damages the brand at all, as the two games have completely different audiences. Pokemon Go probably appealed more to lax fans who didn't buy every new game. I doubt it would do much for people who wanted the mechanics that keep them coming back year after year. I would also say that the 3DS games appeal more to children, and Go to nostalgia ridden adults, but I've seen a lot of people who carry their obsession with the core games into adulthood.

If anything, the lack of a compelling high end for Go might drive some to try the new game that might not have otherwise. Or at the very least, pick up one of the dozens of games they missed.

The biggest probable impact (good or bad) is likely instead on their presence outside their own consoles. People have been asking them to try something like this for a long time, and whether or not they consider it a success may determine if they do it again in the future.

I logged on for the Halloween event, which touted lots of "creepy" pokemon spawns.

Which is true - from my couch I saw Cubone, Marowak, Haunter, Ghastly (three of which I needed) - but even walking around the neighborhood, nothing spawned. At all. Zip, zilch, nada. Not even Rattata and Pidgey.

Pokemon GO finally gets a new Pokemon tracker in select places outside San Francisco

Remember when Pokemon GO got a new system for finding nearby Pokemon (to replace the one that’d broke almost immediately after launch) … but it worked pretty much exclusively in San Francisco? Well, good news/bad news time.

The good news: more people outside of San Francisco are getting it now!

The bad news: its still not for everybody.

The company just announced a small roll out on their Facebook page.

The regions that are getting the tracker starting immediately:

    • The rest of the San Francisco Bay Area (we’ve confirmed it’s up and working in Oakland)
    • Parts of Arizona (they don’t specify which parts, but I’d guess its the major cities)
    • The Seattle area of Washington

That seems like a pretty small chunk of the world considering that they first rolled out the tracker in San Francisco three months ago — but I’ll take it. Progress is progress, and hopefully it snowballs from here.

The hobbled tracking system has been one of the most complained-about issues in the game — it makes the game less about tracking nearby Pokémon and more about wandering aimlessly. The game had a tracking system at launch that seemed to work well enough, but it was disabled within the week as the game’s servers crumbled under the strain of the hype train.

Players filled the gap with external Pokémon tracking systems that they’d built themselves — many of which tapped Niantic’s APIs in unofficial ways for data. The company moved to lock down their API, and many of these mapping services subsequently went down as a result.

This newer tracker isn’t quite the same as the one that appeared at launch. Whereas the original system used a set of footprint icons to convey distance and thus allowed the player to figure out when they were walking in the right direction, the new system instead tells you which PokéStop a Pokemon is near. And if the Pokémon isn’t near any Poké Stop… well, you’re back to walking aimlessly.

It looks like Pokémon Go is getting its second generation of creatures soon

Mobile smash hit Pokémon Go is being prepped for the second generation of Pokémon species.

That's according to details datamined from the game's latest Android patch, discovered by TheSilphRoad.

v0.45.0 includes the first lines of creature data for Pokémon numbered #152 (Chikorita) through to #251 (Celebi), although their models and move data have yet to be added.

These 100 Pokémon debuted in the second generation of games, Pokémon Gold and Silver, which originally launched for Game Boy Color back in 1999.

This generation introduced cute egg Pokémon Togepi, new starters Cyndaquil, Totodile and Chikorita, as well as baby Pikachu - Pichu.

Pokémon Go even includes placeholders for all of the second generation legendary monsters such as Ho-Oh and Lugia - despite first generation legendaries such as Articuno, Zapdos, Moltres, Mewtwo and Mew not yet being available.

On top of all that, the latest update finally sees the inclusion of Ditto's move Transform. Shape-shifting Ditto is the only non-legendary Pokémon from the original 151 species not currently available to catch in the game. It remains to be seen how it will appear.

Pokémon Go developer Niantic has yet to say when more Pokémon will be added to the game, although it has announced the upcoming addition of daily quests - not yet released, but also spotted in the latest update data.

    Ditto is supposedly available now.

Whether it's part of an event or a permanent addition I've been unable to find explicit information.

You Can Now Play Pokémon Go On An Apple Watch—But Not Catch Pokémon

The press release reads, “Apple Watch is particularly well suited to Pokémon GO as it seamlessly combines gameplay and imagination with getting exercise and exploring the real world.”

On your Apple Watch, you’ll receive notifications about nearby Pokémon and PokéStops, get items from PokéStops, hatch eggs and receive candy. Unlike the Pokémon Go Plus wrist accessory, you can’t catch Pokémon on it. You’ll have to catch on your iPhone. Hm. Hmmm.

Starting later this week, you’ll have the opportunity to catch more than 80 Pokémon originally discovered in the Johto region in the Pokémon Gold and Pokémon Silver video games. We’ve also implemented some new features to enhance your Pokémon GO experience.

Additional Pokémon: More than 80 Pokémon that were originally discovered in the Johto region in the Pokémon Gold and Pokémon Silver video games, as well as Pokémon with gender-specific variations, will start rolling out in Pokémon GO.

New Evolutions: There are now more opportunities to evolve your Pokémon in Pokémon GO than ever before. Some Pokémon originally discovered in the Kanto region will soon be able to evolve—into Pokémon that inhabit the Johto region! Be on the lookout for new Evolution items at PokéStops, which you’ll need to evolve some Pokémon.

New Encounter Gameplay: When you encounter Pokémon in the wild, don’t be surprised if they react in new ways as you’re trying to catch them. You’ll also notice the addition of new item carousels that allow you to select Berries and Poké Balls directly from the encounter screen. Hone your skills and catch those elusive Pokémon!

New Berries: Pokémon enjoy eating Berries, and you’ll have the opportunity to get two new Berries by spinning the Photo Disc at PokéStops—Nanab Berries and Pinap Berries! Giving a Pokémon a Nanab Berry will slow its movements, making it easier to catch. The Pinap Berry doubles the amount of Candy you’ll receive if your next catch attempt succeeds.

New Avatars and an Expanded Wardrobe: Now you’ll be able to give your avatar a complete upgrade! Customize your look with a whole new selection of hats, shirts, pants, and other items.

Be sure to use the hashtag #PokemonGO on Twitter to share your experiences as you explore your local neighborhoods with family and friends. We can’t wait to see the Pokémon you catch!
I haven't opened the game since the Winter Holiday event shafted me from getting any of the 2nd gen eggs or a Santa Pikachu.

Nope, they killed the goose. It's dead. It died back in September. (August even?). Sad.

Yep, it's dead. Trade + real PvP would make me re-consider the game.
