[edit] First EverQuest expansion: The Ruins of Kunark

The first of the EverQuest expansions, The Ruins of Kunark was released on April 24, 2000. It marked a major change in the game as it increased the level cap from 50 to 60. Another element that was added was the introduction of the playable race of lizards, the Iksar. The continent of Kunark upon which the expansion was based contained zones appropriate for every level of the time allowing players to go from 1st through 60th without leaving the confines of the expansion.

Another major aspect of the expansion was the introduction of class based Epic weapons such as the Staff of the Four. These Epics, now refered to as 1.0, were received through long involved quests that at various points would require raid level encounters to be completed before the final reward was attained. While at the time all of these Epics were seen as the pinnacle of the appropriate classes main weapon, almost all have been superceeded by other weapons or the newer Epic quests released in Omens of War, considered the 2.0 Epics. The sole exception is the Cleric Epic, the Water Sprinkler of Nem Ankh, which while rarely equiped is retained and regularly used due to the mana free effect of a Reviviscence spell, or 96% experience ressurection.
