Sorry, but I think it's morbid, and pretty sick. Nutbags selling rocks from the rubble were being arrested or detained, and when the government does the same thing, it's supposed to be patriotic? WTF?WASHINGTON, D.C. Corp. ID Center, Thursday, 8:55 AM — Today history is being made! For the first time ever, a legally authorized government issue silver dollar has been struck to commemorate the World Trade Center and the new Freedom Tower being erected in its place. It's the U.S. territorial minting of the 2004 "Freedom Tower" Silver Dollar from CNMI. Most importantly, each coin has been created using .999 Pure Silver recovered from Ground Zero!
No, this is not a misprint. The silver used in each gleaming dollar coin is from Ground Zero! You see, when the Twin Towers fell on September 11, 2001, a bank vault full of .999 Pure Silver bars was buried under hundreds of tons of debris. After months of salvage work, many of the bars were found. Now, the same silver that was reclaimed from the destruction has been used to create the magnificent 2004 “Freedom
Tower” Silver Dollar.
The stunning design of the 2004 “Freedom Tower” Silver Dollar is the work of renowned State Quarter artist and NCM Chief Engraver Daniel Carr. The obverse celebrates our recovery and renewal with a glistening vision of the new "Freedom Tower," dedicated on July 4, 2004, rising from the ashes of Ground Zero. On the reverse, the frosted New York skyline featuring the magnificent Twin Towers gleam against a mirror-like background. Beneath them is our promise: "We Will Never Forget," These silver dollars may well be among the most historically meaningful coins you will ever own.
ADVANCE DISCOUNT PRICE
Issue price has been set at $39 per coin. However, during this limited special release, the "Freedom Tower" Silver Dollar can be yours for only $19.95.
Of course, each "Freedom Tower" Silver Dollar comes with a Certificate of Authenticity, and is individually numbered. Distribution will take place in registration number order. So, the earliest reservations receive the highly coveted lowest registration numbers.
Perhaps they'll start digging up dead presidents and selling their toebones because it's 'patriotic?'
Ground Zero was a large grave. Selling anything from there for any reason is fairly twisted.

In the words of Ray Barrone's mom: "I don't like that."
Too bad the good points of many threads here on Graffes get buried in shit.

They've been blaring these things on television as well.
If it's a hoax, it's a well funded one.

Yeah, kinda like Guam or American Samoa. One of our non-colonies.Originally Posted by Dmitry the Wizzy

Under the U.S. Constitution, only the federal government can mint legal tender coins. CNMI (aka national collectors mint) can buy legal tender, paint it, and sell it (it's only illegal to alter currency if you devalue the currency). But crap like this is BS.
CLARIFIED: It's either painted legal tender, or its not legal tender. If its made of the silver they purport it to be made of, it's not legal tender.

Are they really calling the new building the "Freedom Tower"? I hadn't heard that.
The spire on the top of the tallest building in the reconstruction has some name like that. 1776' high and all.
The original design was quite attractive.
The overall project is still going to be called the world trade center IIRC.
if they want patriotic, bring back the gold dollar >.<
It is rather common for small island nations and terrritories to put out commemorative, collectible coins and stamps to make money. The islands have very few natural resouces, so it is a way to try to make money in international trade. They use the phrases "legally authourized government issue" and "US territorial minting" separately to make people think it is a US government issued coin, but it is not. This thing is not US currnecy (and they do not claim that it is.) I have nothing against salvaging the silver bars that were in the towers, but I think capitalizing on their noteriety is in poor taste.
That "freedom dollar" pisses me off. I almost posted a rant about it the first time I saw that shit on TV. $40 for a DOLLAR so you can make money off of people who died and abuse that memory? *much hate*

Back to your regularly scheduled sig.
It isn't even really a dollar. They call it a dollar, but it isn't money, that is, it isn't legal currency anywhere.Originally Posted by Amris

They need to have a commercial using dead celebrities to sell the freedom dollar. That should get the buck rolling.
That coin is butt ugly and so is the concept. I'm just glad the U.S. Mint wasn't doing something this asstastic.

I'm still amused that they always put the 'strict limit of 5 coins per collector' tag at the end of each of those coin ads (I believe they did a similar thing with the Challenger explosion). That is so a marketing ploy, just who is going to think "I should order five of those!" unless they lead you into thinking that way by limiting the amount you can order?

who the hell would want that in their house?
Yeah, let's take some metal that was present when a whole ton of people died and make coins out of it. That'll have *really* good energy.
